Maryland Electrolysis Committee requests attendance, workgroup debates CEU vrs. practice hrs. on renewal & license competence

The Maryland Electrolysis Committee under the Maryland Nursing Board is holding a work group open to previous and current Maryland licensed electrologists on August 4, 2010 from 10 AM to 1 PM to determine if the present 10.0 CEU per year is still a needed requirement to ensure competency for annual  license renewal.

This not only impacts current licensees, if you have turned in your license due to economics or excessive cost of holding a license, you should attend . What is your opinion? In addition, make your voice heard concerning how re-instating licensees could also be more fairly and expediently  accomplished. Everyone who attended Electrolysis School in Maryland and passed their state Board Exam has put the same amount of time and effort into their education, so attend and give your input and advice.

Notes: A Nursing Board rep has reportedly advised the Electrolysis Committee that NURSES do not have to take expensive CEU, they instead use “practice hours” to indicate  competency for license renewal. It has been suggested that the Electrologist Committee consider doing the same, as CEU seem to be very time consuming, costly and excessive hours are spent by the board on this issue.

The committee is requesting your participation, so they can reach a consensus of what electrologists want to have happen in this matter. Questions to consider:

  • Would you like to continue to take 10.0 CEU in order to be renewed annually?
  • OR… would you rather the committee accept a statement of your annual  practice hours that you spend with patients to assure them of  your competence- and eliminate CEU completely?
  • Should the Committee facilitate the reinstatement of licensees who have turned in their license because they worked only part time and could not afford the license fee and the CEU costs?

Did you know:

  • That the number of electrologists has declined dramatically in Maryland, &  is perilously low?
  • Did you know that 8-10 years ago the number of licensees were over  200 plus, last year at 120 plus, and this reportedly  stands at  somewhere in the 60’s?
  • How does this impact the Committee’s ability to lobby the state for continued licenses for electrologists?  At the next regular Sunset Review by the state, it  could easily be determined that licensing is no longer needed. This issue was put forth by the state at the last review!
  • Do you think we need to be licensed at all?

Background:  A  survey the Electrolysis Committe sent out last month apparently was not clear to everyone and many did  not clearly  understand the purpose of the survey. After all, most electrologists have little input into legislative questions and issues. As a result the  Committee feels that the survey result was inconclusive. The work group is a wonderful and response action taken by your Committee to include the input of licensees. (YOU!) They will take the time to explain the options and I assume ask for input on solutions. This is your chance to have an impact on your profession and your future.

Permanent Cosmetics more popular than ever- bustling business in a down economy.

Lasting Effects TM Permanent Cosmetic Institute is proud to be in our eighth year!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT OVER THE WEEKEND- PERMANENT COSMETICS ARE MORE POPULAR THAN EVER!
Are you uncertain whether or not to seek training at this time?
Lasting Effects has been a leading clinic in the Mid-Atlantic for 18 years.  Owner and instructor Roxanne’s  skill and artistry ensure that you will also be able to apply basic permanent cosmetics that look natural- and you will be personally taught and supervised by her. We find that  the  demand is higher than ever for  her permanent cosmetics,   even though the economy is slow.
Why? It’s simple. Women want to keep up their appearance, and are very determined to do so. Many new clients have recently discovered  that our lifelike permanent cosmetics do this.
  • Some want to look younger, but say they can not afford plastic surgery.  It can be 10-15 times the cost of a full makeover.
  • Some want to make their lips fuller , but can not afford repeated fat injections which cost as much as lipliner, but must be repeated every few months
  • Some want to look as if they have had a eyelift, eyeliner can give a lifted appearance to the outside eyelid without the scars, surgery or pain.
  • Some want a forehead lift, eyebrows can be designed and applied to look like a lifted brow with no surgery or pain.  Savings:  $ 6,000.00
If you believe that most women want cosmetics  to look real, soft and natural, know that it can   only be done with the professional coil machine, and we are the only state approved, higher education school on the East Coast teaching our creation “the Natural Look.”
Have a nice Memorial Day weekend.
PERMANENT COSMETICS – PRO MACHINE OR PENS- HOW CHOOSING EQUIPMENT WILL AFFECT YOUR SUCCESS
 Lasting Effects TM Permanent Cosmetic Clinic, has been a  leading  force in Maryland and on the East Coast  for 19 years straight. Our “Natural Look” Permanent Cosmetic style was created by owner/ instructor Roxanne in 1991 and is the only method used at our clinic and school. It is versatile, allowing Roxanne to offer both soft, natural styles such as feathered eyebrows and soft eyeliner, yet also has the versatility to produce a darker eyeliner when requested. The Clinic’s success, year after year is based on being the only clinic  able to give women the natural appearance they want. As our clients say-”You will know the difference when you see it!”
CHOOSING EQUIPMENT- FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION
What are the basics you need to know before choosing the school and style of permanent cosmetics you will learn? I have a question for you. Can you sell pain? If not, do not choose painful methods! Read on…
Things to consider before choosing equipment and a training program-
1. Always look at the pictures to see if the cosmetics being done at the school’s clinic suits you. Ask if the pictures are the actual work done by that technician on their real patients. (Some may show you nationally produced, airbrushed pictures. )
ALL PATIENT PICTURES AT LASTING EFFECTS ARE OUR REAL PATIENTS AND THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE UNTOUCHED.
2. Ask what type of equipment is being used? Manual pen, Electric pen or a Professional Coil Machine? This affects the final appearance and how permanent they are.
FYI : THREE TYPES OF EQUIPMENT = THREE DIFFERENT LOOKS.
Do you want to look as if you are wearing a cosmetic tattoo, or do you want a soft, natural look?
There are three major equipment classifications:
* Professional Coil Machine. (Used at Lasting Effects TM)
* Manual pens
* Electric pens ( both dial and digital)
*
Knowing the basic differences in equipment before you choose a school is vastly important to your sucess! ONLY the professional coil machines produce an appearance that looks soft, and natural.
__________________________________________________________________
I. The Professional Coil Machine is the equipment of choice for those who wish to have the cosmetic be permanent ( 8-10 years) and natural looking. When done correctly it cause very little swelling.
NOTE: A professional coil machine is the only equipment which can produce “the natural look”, using a wide assortment of artistic strokes and or lines, with crisp or soft edges. Techncians who are skilled can also do thick, thin, light, dark, smooth, scattered & blending. It uses ultra fine tips, as fine as the width of a single hair. The most natural looking because the techncian can draw as if with a pen or brush. Eyebrows are done in strokes. Due to the fine size of the tips, topicals are very effective & most patients report complete lack of any stinging.
Who uses this equipment: Roxanne uses this equipment and teaches this in our state approved school. Few in Maryland have the education or training to use this equipment.
Application usually results in :Normal result: There no swelling on eyebrows and lips. You can go back to work or out to lunch afterwards.
Color pattern: Strokes or shading & blending. No dots!
Permanency: 6-12 years, before recoloring is required.
Our overall rating: Most permanent, not painful , (occasionally painful on lips) natural in appearance.
.
You can see why Lasting Effects TM Permanent Cosmetic Clinic choose to use ONLY the coil machine
II. Manual pens. These are small plastic pens, with large gauge, regular size tattoo needles.
The needles are hand punched into the skin. Patients report that this usually painful, even with topical. and that the treatments take 2-3 hours and requires 2-3 repeat treatments. Due to this being a hand method, the instrument implants the least amount of pigment.
Who uses this equipment: Example- About 10% or less of technicians in Maryland use this method.
Application usually results in : swelling, bleeding and scabbing before healing.
Appearance: This looks like a solid tattoo. Eyebrows are filled in solid, like an eyebrow pencil. Some are even outlined around the outside. Lips have a hard, dark line. Eyeliner is sapplied in conjoining dots, the edge is irregular, not smooth. Color on most cosmetics is dark and solid. Most patients feel this looks artifical, and appears to be a tattoo.
Color pattern: Dots, overlapping.
Permanency: Usually needs to be reapplied every year and is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo.
Our overall rating: Semi-permanent, painful, artificial in appearance.
III. Electric Pens. The electric pens are primarily from Asia and use large gauge, tattoo needles. Patients report that this usually painful, even with topical. Treatments take 2-3 hours and requires 2-3 treatments. The appearance of looking hard and dark, like a tattoo.
Who uses this equipment:We find that at least 85-90 % of the technicians in Maryland seem to be using this equipment.
Application usually results in : swelling, bleeding and scabbing before healing. Electric pens implant more pigment that manual pens but the overall appearance is the same as the pen.
Appearance: This looks like a solid tattoo. Eyebrows are filled in solid, like an eyebrow pencil. Lips have a hard, dark line. Eyeliner is smudged , not smooth. Color is applied in overlapping dots. Color on most cosmetics is dark and solid. Most patients feel this looks artifical, and appears to be a tattoo.
Color pattern: Dots, overlapping.
Permanency: Usually needs to be reapplied every two years and is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo.
Our overall rating: Semi-permanent, painful, artificial in appearance
.
Why are some permanent cosmetics seemingly painless, & others report very painful?
When permanent cosmetics are applied with a professional grade  coil machine,  using the correct size micro needles for facial application, patients rarely experience any discomfort.
In fact, on eyeliners, many say it tickles( due to the vibration.)
Techs who have been trained in the use of electric pens (digital) will attend our conferences and can simply can not believe their eyes, when the patients feel no pain and little swelling. They ask the patient, “Are you sure you are not feeling anything?” Then they turn to me and say, “Why hasn’t anyone told me about this, why do I not know about this? Why didn’t anyone tell me ?
Research your new field before taking training. Understand the equipment, it’s limitations and benefits.
Permanent Cosmetic Training gives women the ability to direct own future,raises self esteem.
Women who take the professional permanent cosmetic course we offer are seeking a new career after years in a different field. They selected us to train with because they felt , after research that our experience and method, and credentials would assure them good education. Women gain higher self esteem by going into business for themselves, so they can make decisions and direct their own future.
What are the  most often cite two  reasons they wanted to learn permanent cosmetics?
1. “I wanted something I could do and be my own boss, instead of working for someone else.
2. “I want to work part-time on my own, and develop my own business while still working my job.
If you have similar goals, consider what all business people know- that now is the best time to get started, as no time will ever be perfect!
Evidence Gathers- Permanent Cosmetic Treatments Are Weathering the Economic Downturn Better Than Indulgence Treatments.
Evidence Gathers- Permanent Cosmetic Treatments Are Weathering the Economic Downturn Better Than Tradtional Spa Treatments.
Several articles have come across my desk , all say that many spas and salons continue to struggle in the economic downturn, along with other businesses.
BUT… medi-spas are claiming they are less effected.
in fact, many clients say that they are more willing to get treatments that offer permanent results. This includes laser, botox and permanent cosmetics, which are viewed as value added services. In contrast, articles claim that women see traditional spa services such as massage, nails, body wraps, etc. as an “indulgence”- no matter how relaxing or wonderful!
If this is the case, spas would do well to give women what they want- if they are legally allowed to offer the sought after services. Most spas can offer permanent cosmetics, and can market them to be a problem solving service. It is essential that they be of the natural look style, or they will be viewed as make-up, and time savers, but little else.
“Natural Look Permanent Cosmetics- they are indistinguishable from real features,so they can permanently correct flaws, often make women look noticably younger. Of course they can be applied a little darker to look like soft and tasteful makeup, and this allows the look of a flawless appearance- all day long.
Our own clients- This past two months we have served numerous nurses (who work long hours and require a professioanl, no fuss appearance).
We also have had clients who are out of work ( they say they are doing permanent cosmetics and botox to be more competitive with younger people as they seek jobs.) Enthusiam among clients to refer is high.
The pattern is consistant, permanent procedures are viewed as valuable,even in a downturn economy! Women feel permanent cosmetics can give women over 40 an edge in looking younger. This is viewed as way to keep a job or get a job. Don’t ignore your clients needs.
Spa owners seem to agree that traffic on services is down. The best way to higher traffic is a good offense. Upgrade your spas offerings. Send a trusted, professional employee to the Lasting Effects Permanent Cosmetic Institute to get trained.
Example of an article segment from link at- http://www.thenational.ae/article/20090711/BUSINESS/707119962/1005
…”At Aesthetica Clinic Dubai, the number of patients has risen by 20 per cent in the past few months, according to Dr Maria Khattar, the clinic’s chief executive. Rising patient numbers encouraged Dr Khattar to open clinics in Dubai Healthcare City and Deira last year. This year, she plans to open two more branches in the Jumeirah area.
Both doctors said many of their clients sought anti-ageing treatments to boost self-esteems battered during the economic downturn.
“It’s like when you feel depressed, you go shopping,” Dr Sawaf said. “In these low times some people want to treat themselves and look younger.” Academic studies have highlighted the link between attractiveness and job opportunities, the so-called “beauty premium”.
In 2005, the US Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis found that attractive people earn on average 5 per cent more than their plain-looking counterparts.
“The truth is, looking good can mean having more opportunities in the job market,” Dr Khattar said. “It seems frivolous but it is the general perception.”
As well as Botox, popular treatments include laser treatments for hair removal, skin tightening and plasma skin resurfacing. “More people are realising that they can get natural results without going under the knife,” Dr Khattar said.
Sara said she considered her Botox treatment a necessary investment. In fact, she said, her interest in the anti-ageing business grew so much so that she decided to work at the clinic where she received her treatment.
Lasting Effects Institite-Tips for Students Series-#1:Selecting Permanent Cosmetic Training by Equipment & Reputation.
July 8, 2009
The Natural Look is preferred by Lasting Effects clients 50-1. By learning this, you can be much more effective in your practice. Selecting Training by Equipment and Reputation. over the phone, without ever coming into the office?
Lasting Effects TM -Tips for Students #1:
Did you know that most of our patients book
Our Natural Look Permanent Cosmetics are preferred by our clients 50-1, w/ a proven 18 yr track record.
We track our statistics so we know if our marketing and methods are pleasing our patients.
Patients say- “I want it to look natural, not like some I have seen. ” What negative comments have you heard from friends about permanent cosmetics they do not like? Probably- “it looks like a tattoo”, “way to dark”, “it looks like a pencil was used, I want it look real” .
END RESULT-Lasting Effects TM Permanent Cosmetic Clinic has been # 1 in Maryland for 18 yrs. and is a leader on the east coast in both cosmetics applied and students taught.
Why? What is different about cosmetic pens vrs. the pro. cosmetic tattoo machines?have special single needles, in a small sizes which draw individual hairs in line strokes. As the needle moves smoothly across the skin it lends the life-like appearance you see in our “natural look” photos. They produce our “natural look” style, which we created in 1991, using current methods modified with our custom colors and new artistic techniques.
Professional cosmetic tattoo machines
Pensseem to produce a more artifical look. This is almost unavoidable when cosmetics are applied with permanent cosmetic pens. They apply the color in clumps or dots, which are joined together and filled in for a solid appearance. They can not move fast enough to have a drawn line, like a machine can. Technically- this is due to the larger gauge needles used by pens, which are gathered in a clump ( known in the trade as a group.) Pens have lower power and lower running speed . Pens typically use from 5 – 15 needles in a group to apply a solid, “filled in” eyebrow. These are technical limitations of the pen, and may eventually be overcome by manufacturers.
Pen school students-Look at the photos of other schools cosmetics done by students. with a pen.
What do you see? You may have a hard time finding some pictures of students work. What do you think that means?
Well, then next step would be to examine the instructors work, as this is what you can expect to achieve someday. Make sure it is not a professional photo, but an unretouched, amateur photo.
Evaulation of tip # 1.-Write down the following questions and answer them on paper:
1. Which style of permanent cosmetic would you chose, if you were shopping around?
2. How will you be able to compete or be successful if someone shows up in your state who can apply the “natural look’?
3. Why do other schools not show their students work?
Did you know that even those who have already taken a “pen” course, come to Lasting Effects TM Permanent Cosmetic Institute to be retrained?
More- in tip #2-why skin repigmented and scar cover-up can NOT be done effectively with a pen.
